The fens of eastern England were a working landscape before they were farmland: people lived by fishing, fowling, cutting reed and grazing animals on summer pasture, and they did well enough out of it. In the seventeenth century investors hired Dutch engineers to drain the whole thing and convert it to arable, which made the land far more valuable to the people who owned it and destroyed the livelihood of the people who used it. The commoners fought back for decades, breaking banks, filling ditches and taking the case to court, and they lost. The drained peat then began to shrink, which is why parts of the fens are now below sea level and require constant pumping to stay dry.
