Where it comes from

The story of Lindley

Lindley Murray, a Pennsylvania-born Quaker lawyer who settled in England, published his English Grammar in 1795, and it became the standard schoolbook on both sides of the Atlantic for half a century, selling millions of copies. In 1838 the botanist John Lindley was asked to report on the royal gardens at Kew, then threatened with being broken up; his report recommended making Kew a national botanical garden, and it became one. As an American first name Lindley was given to both sexes in the twentieth century and has leaned toward girls.

Lindley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 17 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lindley sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real English place name with a clear meaning.
  • Works for either child.
  • Rare, so a Lindley is unlikely to share the name.
What to consider
  • People will hear Lindsey or Linley.
  • It leans to girls but not decisively, so either child may be taken for the other on paper.
  • As a surname-first name it will sometimes be taken for a last name.
