Where it comes from
From Lindal to Lindell
The story of Lindell
Swedish surnames of the nineteenth century were frequently built rather than inherited: when patronymics were abandoned, families chose names by combining two nature words, and Lindberg, Lindgren, Lindqvist, Lindahl and Lindell all come out of that. They are a distinctively Swedish kind of name and they arrived in America in enormous numbers. Once here, the second half was reanalysed: an American reader sees the -ell ending of Odell and Ferrell rather than a Swedish valley, and the doubled l follows from that reading. The record shows the name given to girls as well as boys.

the lime-tree valley
The Swedish lind is the lime or linden tree and dal is a valley. As an American name the second half may equally be the productive -ell ending, in which case the valley is not there at all.

Fashion outlook
Lindell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
