Libby
Feminine · “through Elizabeth”
Libby is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 17,966 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Libby is one of the many short forms English speakers carved out of Elizabeth, alongside Bess, Betty, Beth and Eliza — a name so long-used it grew a whole family of nicknames. It has been on the American record since the nineteenth century without ever disappearing, and it stayed a going concern in Britain and Ireland too. Two syllables, both easy: a bounce at the front, a soft landing.

From Elisheva to Libby
The story of Libby
Elizabeth reached English from the Hebrew Elisheva by way of the Greek Elisabet, the form used by the Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures and in the New Testament. Once the name settled into medieval and early modern England it was clipped and reshaped constantly — Ibb, Ibby, Bess, Betty, Beth, Elsie — and Libby belongs to that same workshop of household forms. By the nineteenth century it was doing duty as a name in its own right on both sides of the Atlantic, appearing in American records as an entry, not just an affectionate aside. It has also long served as an English surname, which is part of why the spelling looks familiar even to people meeting it as a first name for the first time.

through Elizabeth, from Hebrew Elisheva — "my God is an oath"
That Libby is a pet form of Elizabeth is not in doubt. The Hebrew root behind Elizabeth is read two ways: "my God is an oath" is the most widely accepted, while "my God is abundance" or "plenty" is the serious competing reading. Both point to the same element, El, for God.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Lera test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Libby's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lera climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lera's path sketches the road Libby is walking now.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on first sight and first hearing — no spelling out, no correcting.
- Comes with a built-in formal option: many families register Elizabeth and use Libby, or the reverse.
- On the American record continuously since the nineteenth century, without ever vanishing from use.
- Familiar across the English-speaking world, with a solid footing in Britain and Ireland as well as the US.
- It is a diminutive by origin, so a child who wants something longer on a diploma or a résumé has no built-in option unless you register Elizabeth. Some parents do exactly that; others are happy for Libby to stand on its own, as it has for generations.
- Expect the question "is that short for something?" now and then, from teachers and forms alike.
- Libby's is a long-standing American canned-food brand, so the name carries a supermarket echo for some people — mild, and it fades fast with a real person attached.
- It sits close to Livvy, Lizzy and Libbie in the ear, so mishearings and helpful respellings are likely from time to time.
