Where it comes from

The story of Lewie

The Welsh half is the surprise. Llywelyn is one of the great Welsh names, carried by the princes who held the north against English kings, and its opening sound — a double l made by breathing around the tongue — does not exist in English at all. Clerks and officials writing Welsh names into English documents reached for whatever was nearest, and what they reached for, again and again, was Lewis. So a substantial number of families called Lewis in Wales and in America are not carrying a French royal name at all; they are carrying a Welsh one that English could not spell, flattened into a spelling that happened to already exist.

Famous warrior

If the French name is behind it, the Germanic elements mean fame and battle. If the Welsh one is, the name is Llywelyn and means something quite different and not agreed. The two have nothing in common and English has spelled them the same way for four hundred years.

Pronouncing Lewie

LOO-ee

Two syllables, stress at the front. The French name is said the same way; the English Lewis sounds its s and this short form does not.

Lewie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1937, with 25 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lewie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm on sight and easy at any age.
  • Two quite different formal names are available behind it.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being dictated.
What to consider
  • Louie and Louis are both commoner and his will be written as one of them.
  • It reads as a nickname, so a long form will be assumed.
  • The two possible origins have different meanings, so neither is safely his.
