The story of Letti
Roman emperors put personified virtues on their coinage — Pax, Fides, Concordia, Laetitia — and several became women's names. Laetitia was used in medieval England as Lettice, which was the ordinary English form for centuries before the salad vegetable made it awkward. Letitia and its short forms Letti, Lettie and Tish appear in American records through the nineteenth century.
Meaning
joy, gladness
From Latin laetitia, joy or gladness, on laetus, glad; Roman imperial coinage struck Laetitia as a personified virtue, which is how a number of Latin abstract nouns became names.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jalene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Letti's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jalene climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jalene's path sketches the road Letti is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning that is bright and needs no explaining.
- Letitia stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
- Warm and immediately friendly, and understood by everyone.
- Lettie is the more common spelling and will be written for her.
- The older English form Lettice is now a salad vegetable in most ears.
- It reads as a nickname, which may matter on a formal document.
