Where it comes from

The story of Lesia

Larysa Kosach took the pen name Lesia Ukrainka, which means simply Lesia the Ukrainian, and wrote poetry and verse drama through decades of illness and of imperial restrictions that made publishing in Ukrainian a legal problem. She is on the currency now. Her name is ordinary in Ukraine and always has been. The American Lesia has no connection to any of that: it appears in the record in the middle of the twentieth century, among a group of short names ending in the same syllable, and its most likely parent is a name that was already in the room.

defender

The Ukrainian Lesia is a familiar form of Oleksandra, and carries that name's Greek sense of defending. The American Lesia has no settled parent; Leslie, Lisa and Alicia have all been suggested and none can be shown.

Lesia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1965, with 280 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lesia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every sound in it is easy in English and the spelling follows the sound.
  • It is a current, ordinary name in Ukraine, which gives it real ground.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and nothing complicated in it.
What to consider
  • Leshia, Lecia and Lesia are all in the record and are confused constantly.
  • The Ukrainian and American names share nothing but a spelling, so the meaning depends on the family.
  • English and Ukrainian say it quite differently, which matters in bilingual households.
