The story of Leondre
Legio Septima Gemina was founded in AD 74 and garrisoned in north-west Spain, and the camp it built became a town called Legio. Over centuries the Latin word wore down through Leion to Leon, at which point it was identical to the Spanish word for a lion, and the kingdom that grew up around it adopted a lion as its emblem. The arms of Leon still carry it, and so, by way of the Spanish crown, do a great many other coats of arms. It is the clearest example of a folk etymology becoming official: everyone knew what the word meant, everyone was wrong, and the heraldry recorded the error permanently. The personal name Leon is from the animal and unrelated to any of it.
Meaning
Greek leon, a lion
Leondre joins Leon, from Greek leon, a lion, to the -dre ending found in Deondre and Kendre. The name of the Spanish city Leon comes instead from Latin legio, a legion, and is unrelated to the animal despite the heraldry. The peak is 1995.
