rare

Leoma is a real Old English word. It meant a ray or beam of light, and it turns up in poetry describing fire, dawn and the gleam off metal; it did not survive into modern English, and the American name that matches it letter for letter is almost certainly not descended from it.

How old is the name Leoma?

Leoma first appears in US birth records in 1892 — 133 years ago. The typical Leoma alive today was born around 1924, making them about 101 years old. About 200 people named Leoma are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Leoma most popular?

Leoma peaked in 1901, reaching #918 nationally. See the whole 1901 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Leoma

The name Leo brought a lion into European naming from a place that had no lions. There were none in northern Europe within human memory, so Germanic speakers had no native word for one and took the Latin, and the animal existed for a thousand years mainly as a picture: on shields, on seals, in bestiaries copied from other bestiaries by monks who had never seen one, which is why medieval lions so often look like large angry dogs with human faces. Kings put them on their arms as an assertion rather than an observation. A boy named for a lion in fourteenth-century England was named for something his whole village knew only as a drawing.

Ray of light

The Old English leoma is well attested and means a beam of light. Whether an American family in the eighteen-nineties had any access to it is another matter, and the likelier account is a build on Leo with an added syllable. Both readings should be given, and the coincidence should be described as a coincidence.

Pronouncing Leoma

lee-OH-muh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Old English word would have been said with the weight at the front and both vowels fully sounded, so even where the letters match, the sound does not.

Leoma sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Leoma sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Leo is a fully current name sitting in the front half.
  • The rhythm is easy and every sound is available to an English speaker.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing nothing unfamiliar.
What to consider
  • The Old English match is a coincidence and will be reported as a derivation by people who find it.
  • It will be heard as Leona and Loma, both of which are commoner.
  • There is no secure meaning to give a child who asks.
