Lenoard
Masculine · “lion-brave”
Lenoard moves two letters of a Germanic name past each other, which is the kind of change a tired clerk makes as readily as a family does. The lion at the front of the name is also at the front of another animal's name, and that one records a mistake in natural history.

The story of Lenoard
A leopard is a lion crossed with a panther, according to the people who named it. The Greek compound joins leon to pardos, and medieval bestiaries state the hybrid theory plainly: the leopard was the offspring of a lioness and a male pard, which is why it was spotted rather than tawny and why it was held to be inferior. Heraldry took the distinction seriously — in English blazon a lion shown walking and facing the viewer is technically a leopard, which is why the royal arms of England were described for centuries as three leopards. The animals are of course not hybrids and not closely related in the way supposed. The word is one of the better fossils of a scientific error, and the spots are the entire evidence anyone had.
Meaning
lion-brave
A Germanic compound joining the Latin borrowing for a lion to a word meaning hard or brave. The lion is a loanword into Germanic rather than a native element, which is unusual and is why the name looks half Latin.

Fashion outlook
Lenoard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Len and Lenny both detach and cover different registers.
- The meaning is documented all the way back.
- The name is understood across Europe and the Americas.
- Leonard is the standard spelling and this will be corrected for a lifetime.
- The transposition is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- It looks like a typing error, which is a thing a bearer has to live with.
