Lennard
Masculine · “Lion strong”
Lennard doubles an n and drops the o, and the two changes cancel. The doubling shortens the vowel before it, which was already short; the missing vowel was silent; and the name comes out where it started, one letter shorter and considerably harder to spell from dictation.

The story of Lennard
The saint of the name is remembered for a bargain about prisoners. Leonard of Noblac is said to have been a Frankish nobleman who became a hermit, and the legend has a queen giving birth in his forest with his help, after which the king offered him land; he asked instead for the right to free any prisoner he visited, and got it. He is the patron of captives, and medieval churches dedicated to him were sometimes hung with the chains of people who credited him with their release. Whether any of it happened is another matter; what is documented is that the story was believed, and that the chains were really there.
Meaning
Lion strong
The Germanic joins the borrowed Latin word for a lion to a word meaning brave or hardy. The lion is a loan because there were none in northern Europe; the element arrived with Christianity and Latin learning and was used as freely as the native animals. Nothing in this spelling changes any of that.

Fashion outlook
Lennard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
- Len and Lenny are two short forms in different registers.
- The spelling is standard in Dutch and Scandinavian use, so it is not only an American variant.
- Leonard is the standard English spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- The two changes cancel each other, so neither can be defended in speech.
- It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
