Where it comes from

Our story of Lendell

Lend and loan are the same word, and one of them has a letter it was not born with. The Old English verb was lænan, without a d, and its past tense was lænde. Speakers heard the past tense often enough that the d migrated into the present — so the modern infinitive is built out of a past form, which is an unusual thing for a verb to do. Sound and bound went the same way; so, from a different direction, did thunder and gender, which picked up a d between n and r simply because English mouths insert one there. Loan, meanwhile, is the noun from the same root, borrowed back from Norse, which is why American English uses it as a verb and British English objects. Two forms, one word, and the argument about whether you can loan somebody money is nine hundred years old.

Not established

No single source is documented. As a surname it would be a place or occupational name of uncertain origin; as a build it is a free front on a free ending and means nothing. Nothing in the record separates the two.

Fashion outlook

Lendell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Lindell, Lendel and Randell will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
