Lemont
Masculine · “lawman”
Lemont reads in French as two words meaning the mountain and in Scotland as a surname that is Norse rather than Gaelic. The Norse reading is the more interesting one, because the word behind it names an office that required a man to hold an entire legal system in his head.

The story of Lemont
Iceland had no king and no executive, and its parliament met for two weeks a year on a plain of lava. The one permanent official was the lawspeaker, elected for three years, and his job was to recite the law aloud from memory at the assembly — a third of it each year, so that the whole code was spoken through in a term. He stood on a rock and said it. If anybody disagreed about what the law was, he decided; if he forgot a passage, he was to consult five or more legal experts privately before pronouncing. The system ran for over three centuries before the laws were written down, and the written version records the names of the men who held the office in order, which is how the chronology of early Iceland is anchored. The Norse word for that officer is the one inside this name.

lawman, or the mountain
The Scottish surname Lamont descends from a Norse word meaning lawman, taken into Gaelic and then into Scots. Read instead as French, the name is the article joined to the word for a mountain. Both fit the spelling and the record holds American names of both kinds.

Fashion outlook
Lemont sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
- Both short forms are established names in their own right.
- The spelling is phonetic by English rules and needs no explanation.
- Lamont, Lemonte and Lamonte are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The two possible origins have different stress patterns, so the name is said two ways.
- Which of them applies to a given family is not recorded.
