Lisa can be said two ways in English, LEE-sa or LIE-sa, and the spelling does not tell a reader which. Leesa settles it. The double e in the middle is doing exactly one job: pinning down a vowel that the shorter spelling leaves open.

Where it comes from

The story of Leesa

Lisa is a continental short form. German, Italian, Swedish and Danish had been cutting Elisabeth down to Lisa for centuries before English took the short form up, and English took it late, so that Lisa is scarcely used in Britain or America before the twentieth century and then arrives all at once. Leesa follows in its wake. The ee spelling belongs to a mid-century American habit of writing a name the way it sounds rather than the way it came, the same habit that produced Deena, Teena and Reeta. It removes an ambiguity the original leaves in place, at the price of looking invented.

Meaningscholars disagree

my God is an oath

Leesa carries Elisabeth's meaning, and Elisabeth's meaning is argued over: the Hebrew Elisheva is read either as my God is an oath or as my God is abundance, and the two readings have competed for centuries.

Leesa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 318 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Leesa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It removes the one real ambiguity in Lisa: nobody will say it wrong.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English and no letter is silent.
  • Lee works as a short form and stands alone as a name.
What to consider
  • It will be written Lisa by almost everyone who hears it, and the spelling will need repeating.
  • The ee respelling dates the name firmly to the middle of the twentieth century.
  • It is a phonetic spelling of a name with a very long history, and some people read that as a loss rather than a fix.
