From Alienor to Leanora
The story of Leanora
Eleanor of Aquitaine was queen of France and then of England, mother of Richard the Lionheart and John, and one of the most powerful women of the twelfth century; her name traveled with her. English produced Eleanor, Elinor and Ellenor; Italian and Spanish made Leonora and Leonor; German made Leonore. Beethoven's only opera was originally called Leonore. The L- forms drop the initial vowel — a normal development — and Leanora is an American spelling of that line. Its 1905 peak sits with the general early-century taste for long, formal women's names.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Not established. Eleanor descends from the Occitan Alienor, and the standard explanations are all unsatisfactory. One holds that Eleanor of Aquitaine was named Aenor after her mother and called alia Aenor, 'the other Aenor', which is a folk etymology of the kind medieval writers produced freely. Another proposes an Arabic or Germanic source. The connection to Greek eleos, 'mercy', or to Helen is a later reinterpretation. The name is genuinely old and genuinely unexplained.
