Leander swam the Hellespont every night to see Hero, and drowned when the light she left out for him blew out in a storm. Byron swam the same crossing in 1810 to prove that the story was at least physically possible, and was prouder of it than of anything he had written.

Where it comes from

The story of Leandrew

The strait is about a mile across at the narrowest point and the current runs hard from the Black Sea, which is why the swim is a real one. Byron did it with a companion, took over an hour, and mentioned it in letters for the rest of his life; he had a lame foot and swimming was the one physical thing he did well. The story he was testing is one of the oldest romances in Europe, told by Ovid and by a late Greek poet, and it ends with Hero seeing the body at dawn and throwing herself off the tower.

Not established

The name looks like Leander with the ending replaced by Andrew, and both halves are Greek: Leander is lion-man and Andrew is manly. It may equally be Lee joined to Andrew, which is how a great many American compounds were built. The record carries no indication, and the two possibilities would produce identical letters.

How the name formed

  1. a Greek compound meaning lion-man
  2. the story of Hero and Leander told by Ovid and others
  3. Byron swims the crossing in 1810
  4. American families join Lee and Andrew
  5. Leandrew appears in the record in the 1910s

Fashion outlook

Leandrew sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lee and Drew are both available and both are complete names.
  • It is read correctly at sight by anybody.
  • The Greek name behind it has one of the best stories in the language.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Leander and Leandro by people meeting it once.
  • The stress placement is genuinely unsettled.
  • There is no meaning for the compound, only for its parts.
