From Elazar to Lazer
The story of Lazer
Eliezer is Abraham's steward in Genesis and the name of one of Moses' sons; Elazar is Aaron's son and successor as high priest. Both names stayed in continuous Jewish use, and Yiddish reshaped them the way it reshaped everything — vowels shifted, the opening syllable worn away — giving Lazer, Leizer and Leiser. The same process in Christian Europe produced Lazarus and then the French Lazare and the English Lazarus, from the related Hebrew Elazar. Lazer reaches United States records almost entirely through Ashkenazi and Hasidic families.
Meaning
God has helped
From Hebrew Eliezer or Elazar — El, 'God', with a form of azar, 'to help'. Eliezer gives 'my God is help'; Elazar gives 'God has helped'. Both are documented and both feed the Yiddish Lazer and Leizer, which are pronunciations rather than separate names. The reading is not in dispute.

Pronouncing Lazer
LAH-zer
Two syllables, stress on the first, with an open first vowel — not the LAY of the English laser. Yiddish speakers say it closer to LEY-zer. The English homophone pulls strangers toward the wrong first vowel.

The Mateus test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lazer's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mateus climbed just as high around 2007, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mateus's path sketches the road Lazer is walking now.
Lazer sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A meaning that is a complete sentence rather than a quality, and a documented one.
- Deeply rooted in a living tradition, with Eliezer and Elazar as full formal forms behind it.
- Five letters, all pronounceable, with no consonant cluster to negotiate.
- It is a homophone for the English laser once the first vowel drifts, and it will drift.
- Lazer, Laizer and Leizer are all in use, so the spelling gets asked for.
- It is strongly identified with observant Ashkenazi families, which is either the point or something to weigh.
