Where it comes from

Our story of Laymon

The Greek word laos means the people, and from it Christian Greek made laikos, belonging to the people rather than to the clergy, which gave Latin laicus and English lay. So a layman is a member of the laity, a lay reader is not ordained, and a lay brother in a monastery was a member of the community who did the manual work without taking full vows. The word later broadened to mean anyone outside any profession, which is how a legal document can address the lay reader. The same root is in liturgy, which is a work done for the people. English kept both words and connects them to each other about as often as it connects Laymon to either.

Fashion outlook

Laymon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling twice.
  • Two syllables with a strong front stress carry well across a room.
  • It sits in the familiar family of surnames Americans use in front position.
What to consider
  • It is a homophone of a common English word, which colleagues and classmates will notice.
  • Lamont and Lemon are both close enough to be misheard, and one of them is a fruit.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has nothing settled behind it.
