Von was the busiest second element in a whole generation of American naming. LaVon, DeVon, YVon, Vonda, Yvonne and Lavonne all use it, and Lavon is the plainest of them — a prefix and the element, with nothing else attached. It goes mostly to boys, which is unusual in that family.

How old is the name Lavon?

Where it comes from

The story of Lavon

What makes the -von family worth describing is how systematically it worked. Through the middle of the last century the element combined with La-, De-, Ra- and Sha- at the front and with -da, -ne and -ita at the back, generating dozens of names that were immediately recognizable as names and had never existed before. The plain forms — Lavon, Davon, Devon — went disproportionately to boys, and the elaborated ones to girls, which is a pattern rather than a rule but a fairly consistent one.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The -von element has no meaning of its own. It appears to have been abstracted from Yvonne and Vonda, which do have histories — Yvonne descends from a Germanic word for the yew tree — but an element cut loose from a name does not carry the name's sense with it. The La- prefix contributes nothing either. So this is a name assembled from two components, and the honest answer is that no meaning can be given.

Pronouncing Lavon

luh-VON

luh-VON, two syllables, stress at the back, the first vowel almost swallowed. Some say LAY-von with the weight at the front, which keeps the prefix audible, and both readings are in use.

Lavon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 152 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lavon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Von works as a short form and suits either child.
  • Two syllables with the stress at the end, which balances a front-stressed surname.
  • Every letter behaves as an English reader expects, so it is said right on first sight.
What to consider
  • Lavonne, LaVon and Levon are all in use, and the capital in the middle is a standing question.
  • There is no documented meaning, which is worth deciding how to talk about in advance.
  • The stress falls at either end depending on the speaker.
