Upstate New York was surveyed and settled at the height of a classical fashion, and the men naming the townships reached for the ancient world with both hands: Troy, Utica, Syracuse, Ithaca, Rome, Athens, Carthage, Homer, Cicero, Ovid and Marathon are all within a hundred miles of each other. Nothing about the landscape suggested any of it. What it did was announce that the new republic saw itself as an heir of the old ones, and it put a set of ancient names into ordinary American use — on post offices, on railway timetables, and eventually on children, most of whom had no idea the names had been to Asia Minor first.
