Where it comes from

The story of Latrina

Latin latrina is a worn-down lavatrina, and lavatrina is built directly on lavare, to wash. The same verb sits under lavatory and laundry. In Roman use the word began as the washing place, the room that had the water in it, and only narrowed later to the single fixture English now uses it for. So the collision is real and permanent, but the word being collided with started out meaning something clean, and shrank to its present sense through many centuries of people being squeamish about naming things directly. None of that is an argument for or against the name. It is simply the part of the story a reader deserves to have alongside the part they noticed in the first second.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The compound has no inherited meaning. The back element matches Trina, a short form of Katrina and so ultimately of Katherine, but a syllable used as a building block does not carry the parent name's sense along with it. The front element means nothing and was never meant to.

Three syllables with the weight in the middle. The English word it resembles is stressed on the same syllable, which is what makes the two hard to keep apart when spoken rather than read.

Fashion outlook

Latrina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Trina sits inside it as a short form that carries none of the difficulty.
  • Every sound is ordinary and the spelling follows the sound exactly.
  • The stress in the middle gives it a shape English handles easily.
What to consider
  • The resemblance to a common English word is unavoidable and will be noticed by strangers, teachers and classmates alike.
  • There is no inherited meaning to offer as an answer when that comes up.
  • The short form Trina is close enough to serve as a full name if the longer one becomes a burden.
