The story of Latonya
From the late 1960s, Black American families coined given names in large and documented numbers, using a small set of prefixes attached to existing names and sounds. Tonya was fashionable in exactly those decades, having arrived in English through a Russian novel and the film made from it, which made it an obvious stem. Latonya rose through the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s, alongside Latoya, Latasha and Latisha.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The La- prefix carries no meaning; it is a naming marker rather than a word. The stem Tonya is the Russian familiar form of Antonina, from the Roman family name Antonius, which is probably Etruscan and whose sense is not recoverable. So neither half of the name yields a meaning, which is an honest thing to be able to say.

Fashion outlook
Latonya has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off
- It comes from a documented and deliberate naming tradition, which is a real history in itself.
- Three syllables with a strong middle, a rhythm that carries well when spoken.
- Tonya and Toni are both available as shorter forms with their own records.
- Neither element yields a meaning, which matters to families for whom that is the point.
- The internal capital is a genuine choice between two established spellings.
- The name is closely associated with the 1980s.
