The oil company is named after actual seashells. The founder's father ran a curio shop in London that imported them from the Far East, the business grew into shipping and then into oil, and the company kept the name and put a scallop on the sign — which is why one of the largest corporations on earth is called after a Victorian shop selling ornaments.

Where it comes from

The story of Lashell

Marcus Samuel senior sold decorative boxes covered in shells to Victorian households, and his sons turned the import business into a shipping line and then into an oil company that took tankers through the Suez Canal when nobody else was allowed to. The scallop on the sign has been redrawn a dozen times and has never gone away. It is one of the very few corporate names whose origin is completely literal and completely forgotten: the shell in Shell is a shell.

Fashion outlook

Lashell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight and holds no surprises.
  • Shell is available inside it as a short form and an ordinary word.
  • The rhythm puts the weight at the back, where English rarely does.
What to consider
  • Lashelle is also in the record and the silent letter will be added back.
  • There is no meaning for the compound and no origin outside the pattern.
  • It is closely dated to the middle decades of the last century.
