Lary
Masculine · “from Laurentum”
Lary is the short form of Lawrence written as a name in its own right, and by the time it reached American certificates the connection had effectively been severed. Larry stopped functioning as an abbreviation somewhere in the twentieth century and became an independent name, chosen by families who were not thinking about the longer one at all. The single r is a further step in the same direction.

Where it comes from
From Laurentum, a town whose site is disputed to Lary
The story of Lary
The town has never been securely located. Laurentum appears in Roman literature as an ancient place associated with the founding legends, close to the coast south of Rome, and it was already semi-legendary by the time the writers we have were describing it. Archaeologists have proposed several sites, excavated most of them, and reached no agreement; the best candidates are a scatter of remains that may or may not belong to a single settlement. So the name of a very common European man's name traces back to a place whose position is genuinely unknown. The saint whose fame carried the name across Europe was martyred in Rome in the third century, and the name he carried was already an ordinary Roman one meaning nothing more exciting than where a family had come from.
Meaning
from Laurentum
The parent name means a man from a particular Italian town, which is a place-of-origin name rather than a description, and the laurel that everybody reaches for is one step further back, in the town's own name. So the plant is at two removes. The short form inherits all of that in principle and none of it in practice, since almost nobody using it has the longer name in mind.
How the name formed
- Laurentum, a town whose site is disputed
- Laurentius as a Roman name and then a saint's
- Lawrence across medieval Europe
- Larry and Lary as independent American names

Two syllables, stress on the first. Written with one r, the spelling suggests a long vowel and the name is not said that way; it is identical to Larry in speech, which is a case of the spelling being outvoted by everybody's expectations.

Fashion outlook
Lary sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere.
- It is a full name and a short form at once, which gives it a flexibility longer names lack.
- It has a genuine Roman and medieval history behind it, however faint the connection now is.
- Larry is the spelling everyone knows and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- The single r suggests a pronunciation that nobody actually uses.
- It is strongly tied to one American generation and has not begun to come back.
