Where it comes from

Our story of Larene

Peace was a goddess in both Greece and Rome, and both cities were selective about honoring her. Athens set up a cult and a famous statue — the goddess holding the infant Wealth, which is about as direct a political statement as sculpture gets — in a period when peace had just been negotiated and was worth advertising. Rome built her an enormous altar under Augustus and a temple under Vespasian, both of them immediately after wars, both of them monuments to a peace imposed by winning. A goddess of peace is almost always a victory monument in disguise, and the ancient cities were entirely open about it.

Not established

The ending resembles the tail of Irene, which is the Greek word for peace, but a syllable cut loose from a name does not carry the name's meaning. The front is an American prefix with no sense at all. Nothing here can be translated honestly.

Fashion outlook

Larene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The back stress gives it a strong finish and protects it from clipping.
  • It is read correctly on sight with nothing difficult in it.
  • It is genuinely rare now.
What to consider
  • Lorene, Laureen and Larena are all nearby and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The name belongs firmly to one American era.
  • Neither half carries a meaning that can be stated honestly.
