Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Lanita
Spanish forms diminutives with -ito and -ita, freely and productively, so Juana gives Juanita, Ana gives Anita and Rosa gives Rosita, and the diminutive can be a full legal name. American naming borrowed the ending without the grammar. Attached to a stem that is not a Spanish name, it produces forms that follow no Spanish rule: Lanita, Tanita, Danita and Shanita all take the shape of a diminutive of a name that does not exist. That is not a criticism of the names, which work perfectly well in English, but it is the reason a Spanish speaker meeting one of them cannot parse it, and the reason a reference work that translates the ending is telling the reader something untrue about the whole.

The Vernetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lanita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vernetta climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vernetta's path sketches the road Lanita is walking now.
Lanita sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
