The story of Lamont
Clan Lamont held lands in Cowal in Argyll and took its name from a thirteenth-century chief called Ladhmann, from the Norse office. Scottish emigration carried the surname widely, and it crossed into American given-name use in the twentieth century, taken up particularly in Black American families. Lamont rose through the 1960s and peaked in the mid-1970s.
Meaning
lawman, law-speaker
From the Old Norse lögmaðr — lög, 'law', and maðr, 'man' — the office of the man who knew and declared the law in a society without written statutes. Norse settlers brought both the office and the word to Scotland, where it became the surname Lamont.
