Where it comes from

The story of Hyman

Chaim was a common name in Ashkenazi communities, often given to a sick child in the hope that the name itself would help. Yiddish-speaking emigration to America in the late nineteenth century brought it in large numbers, and the initial sound — a voiceless fricative English lacks — was written variously as H, Ch or Kh. Hyman was the commonest American rendering, and it peaked around 1908 before later generations returned to Chaim or moved to Hyman's English near-namesakes.

Meaning

life

From the Hebrew chayyim, 'life' — grammatically a plural, which Hebrew uses for some abstractions. It is the same word in the toast l'chaim, 'to life'. The name has no other source; the English spelling is a transliteration decision rather than a change of meaning.

Hyman sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 378 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Hyman has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent, undisputed and about as good as a meaning gets.
  • It records a specific and documented moment in Jewish-American history.
  • Hy is a brisk, completely unfussy short form.
What to consider
  • The English spelling coincides with an anatomical term, which is an unavoidable association.
  • The transliteration loses the Hebrew sound entirely, and Chaim is now the commoner English spelling.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
