Our story of Lamond
During the wars of the seventeenth century the Lamonts, on the losing side, surrendered their castles on terms. The terms were not kept. Prisoners were taken to Dunoon and a large number were killed, some of them hanged from a tree in the churchyard, and the episode was serious enough to be raised at a subsequent trial. It is one of the clan massacres that Scottish history has plenty of and that outsiders tend to conflate. A memorial was finally erected on the site in the nineteen-thirties, by which time the event was two and a half centuries old and the tree was long gone.

Fashion outlook
Lamond sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Monty comes off the back of it as a short form and is thoroughly established.
- It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
- It is short on paper and quick to write.
- Lamont is the commoner spelling, so the name will be heard as that.
- Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
- No origin is documented for this form, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
