Lamon can be an American prefixed coinage or a clipped Scottish surname, and the surname is the more interesting of the two. Lamont comes from an Old Norse word for a lawyer, which reached the Hebrides with Norse settlement and became a clan name, so a Scottish highland family carries a job title in a language none of them spoke.

Where it comes from

The story of Lamon

Norse settlement in the Hebrides left a layer of vocabulary and names that Gaelic absorbed completely, to the point where clan names of Norse origin are carried by families who have been Gaelic-speaking for eight hundred years. This is one: a Norse word for the man who knew and recited the law, which in Scandinavian society was a specific and important office, became a personal name and then a surname in the west of Scotland. The clan held Cowal, lost most of it in a seventeenth-century massacre by a neighboring clan, and scattered. The word underneath is the same one that gives Iceland's parliament its speaker's title, which is still in use, and which is one of the oldest continuously held offices in Europe.

Meaningscholars disagree

lawman

If the source is the Scottish surname, the derivation is from a Norse compound meaning a man of the law, and it is well documented. If the source is an American prefixed formation, there is no meaning at all. Both routes were available and the spelling records neither, so the honest answer sets out the two and declines to choose.

How the name formed

  1. A Norse word for the man who knew the law
  2. Carried into the Hebrides with Norse settlement
  3. A Scottish clan name in Cowal
  4. Lamon as an American first name, or a prefixed coinage

Lamon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1974, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lamon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is straightforward and needs no coaching.
  • It has a genuine Scottish surname behind it on one of its two routes.
  • Monty and Lem are two very different short forms and neither is crowded.
What to consider
  • The stress is unsettled and the two readings suggest two different origins.
  • It will be written Lamont or Lemon by people taking it from speech.
  • There is no meaning on the American route, only on the Scottish one.
