Lamarcus
Masculine · “possibly 'of Mars”
Lamarcus joins an American prefix to one of the eighteen names a Roman man could have. The Roman praenomen system was extraordinarily restricted — a handful of first names served the entire citizen body, and Marcus was among the commonest. Attaching a modern prefix to it produces a name of two very different ages. Its peak is 1984.

The story of Lamarcus
Roman men had very few first names to choose from: by the late Republic about eighteen praenomina were in general use, and three or four of them — Marcus, Gaius, Lucius — accounted for the majority of citizens. The real distinguishing work was done by the family name and the cognomen. That system collapsed in the imperial period, and Marcus survived into Christian use through the evangelist Mark and a long line of saints. Its American career as a given name grew from the 1960s, and the La- prefix combined with it in the way it combined with dozens of other elements.
Meaningscholars disagree
possibly 'of Mars', in the Marcus element
Marcus is generally connected to Mars, the god of war, which would make it theophoric in the ordinary Roman way; the derivation is standard but not demonstrated. The La- prefix comes from French and Louisiana Creole surnames, where la is the definite article, and carries no lexical content in this position. So the meaning rests on Marcus, and Marcus is probable rather than certain.

The Terance test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lamarcus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Terance climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Terance's path sketches the road Lamarcus is walking now.
Lamarcus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
