Lacey is a place in Normandy. The village of Lassy gave a Norman family its name, the family came to England in 1066 and became powerful enough that whole districts still carry it, and the surname eventually crossed the Atlantic and moved to the front of the name. Laci is the American respelling with an i.

Where it comes from

The story of Laci

The de Lacy family were among the more successful Norman incomers, holding land in Herefordshire, Yorkshire and Ireland, and the surname spread far beyond them. It became an American first name in the twentieth century, for girls chiefly, helped by the English word lacy, which has nothing to do with it. The -i ending belongs to the middle of the last century, the same habit that produced Jodi, Toni and Traci, and it distinguishes the name from the adjective in writing.

Meaning

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Laci went to 26 girls in 2025, but Lacy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 93, which makes it the 867th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,120 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Laci itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a documented Norman family with a real village behind it.
  • It is short, phonetic and easy to write after one hearing.
  • The sound is entirely familiar in English-speaking countries.
What to consider
  • Lacey is the commonest spelling and will be written instead.
  • The English word lacy is a homophone, which children notice.
  • The -i ending places the name in the middle of the last century.
