Where it comes from

The story of Kyran

Ciarán of Clonmacnoise founded one of Ireland's great monasteries and died at about thirty-three; Ciarán of Saighir is counted among the twelve apostles of Ireland. Both names come from the word for dark. Kyran is a modern spelling and appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

little dark one

Through Ciarán, from the Irish ciar, 'dark' or 'black', with the diminutive -án. The same root gives Kieran and Ciara. The Kyran spelling is a modern English variant. The Irish is ordinary and the reading undisputed.

Kyran sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 189 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kyran went to 68 boys in 2025, but Kiran is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 223, which makes it the 707th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,418 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 7,660 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 25,119 for Kyran itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
