Where it comes from

The story of Kyrah

Greek kyrios and kyria were ordinary words of address before they were names, and the Christian east used them constantly. Russian took Kir and Kira from the Greek and they became established names in their own right. Meanwhile the Persian throne name behind Kyros had its own long history in the Near East. English-speaking families adopted Kira in the twentieth century, and Kyra, Kyrah and Keira are the respellings that followed.

Meaningscholars disagree

lady, or far-sighted

Greek kyria is a lady or mistress, the feminine of the word used for lord. Russian Kira is generally treated as the feminine of Kir, from Greek Kyros, itself the Greek form of the Persian royal name Kurush, whose own meaning is disputed — sun, young, and far-sighted have all been proposed.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kyrah went to 49 girls in 2025, but Kira, Kyra and Kirra and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 1,240, which makes it the 262nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,949 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,296 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 32,801 for Kyrah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two genuinely old ancestries stand behind the sound, one Greek and one Persian.
  • Five letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
  • Ky is a very short, current informal form.
What to consider
  • Kyra, Kira, Keira and Kyrah are four live spellings and all are said at least two ways.
  • The first vowel is genuinely unsettled between KY and KEER.
  • Ciara and Kiara are close enough to be confused with it on a class list.
