Where it comes from

Our story of Janelly

Our reading rather than the record's. Janelle was made in twentieth-century America by taking Jane and adding the French-sounding -elle that Michelle and Danielle had made fashionable. Janelly adds a further layer, replacing the French ending with the -y that Mexican and Mexican-American naming has attached to dozens of women's names — Nayelly, Yamelly, Aracely. Each layer moved the name further from Jane and closer to the family that was actually using it, which is a fair description of how most names travel.

God is gracious

The line runs back through Janelle to Jane, the English feminine of John, from Hebrew Yohanan. Whether Janelly was formed on that line or built from the -elly ending shared with Nayelly and Yamelly in Mexican naming is not documented.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janelly went to 49 girls in 2025, but Janely, Janeli and Janelli and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 173, which makes it the 787th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,424 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 32,801 for Janelly itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jane and Nelly both sit inside it as complete, long-established names.
  • It works in Spanish and in English, with a natural reading in each.
  • Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • The initial J is read entirely differently in English and Spanish, so two versions will follow her.
  • Janelly, Yanely and Janely all appear and none is dominant.
  • Janelle is much better known and will be written for her regularly.
