Kylian
Masculine
Kylian is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,738 boys against 12 girls since 1880.
Kylian is the French spelling of a name carried out of Ireland in the seventh century, when Irish monks walked east into Frankish and German lands. It has three sounds and no hard edges, and it can be said the French way, KEE-lee-ahn, or the English way, KIL-ee-un. In the United States it is new enough that most of the people who have it are still small.

From Cillian to Kylian
The story of Kylian
The root name is Irish: Cillian, borne by a seventh-century monk who left Ireland for Franconia and became the patron saint of Würzburg, where his feast is still kept. Through Latin the name settled into German as Kilian and into Czech as Kilián, staying alive on the continent long after it had thinned out at home. French took it up in the twentieth century and respelled it Kylian, with a y — a form that became widespread in France before it was heard much anywhere else. It is that French spelling, rather than the Irish or German one, that has been climbing in American records.
Meaningscholars disagree
Most often read as "church" or "little church one"
The underlying Irish name Cillian is usually traced to cill, "church" or "monastic cell", with a diminutive ending — roughly "little one of the church". A competing reading connects it to ceallach, an old Irish word taken as "strife" or "contention". Scholars have not agreed, and both readings are seriously held.

Pronouncing Kylian
KEE-lee-ahn (French) or KIL-ee-un (English)
French speakers say KEE-lee-ahn, sometimes compressed to kee-LYAHN. In English-speaking countries the Irish-derived KIL-ee-un is common, and the y in this spelling also pulls some readers toward KY-lee-un. Whichever you choose, expect to state it.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kylian went to 448 boys in 2025, but Killian, Kilian and Kyllian and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,428, which makes it the 246th most-given boys’ name of the year — 376 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 1,196 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 3,813 for Kylian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lyndon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kylian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lyndon climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lyndon's path sketches the road Kylian is walking now.

The trade-off
- Backed by a documented line running from seventh-century Ireland through German, Czech and French use — an old name in a modern spelling.
- Recognizable across several European languages, so relatives and travel documents abroad rarely find it strange.
- Short, obvious nickname in Ky, with the full form still easy to say for a child learning to write it.
- Three syllables with no consonant clusters, which makes it clear over a phone once the spelling is given.
- It has at least two live pronunciations — the French KEE-lee-ahn and the English KIL-ee-un — and no default in American classrooms. Deciding which one is yours before the birth certificate saves years of gentle correction.
- Kilian, Killian and Cillian all exist alongside this spelling, so the y will need repeating at doctor's offices and on school lists.
- In American ears the opening syllable sits close to Kylie, and some people will hear or write it that way at first.
- The spelling is strongly associated with one very famous French footballer, which means instant recognition for some and a single fixed reference point for others.
