Kyli
Feminine · “a narrow strait”
Kyle is a narrow place. The Gaelic caol means narrow, and in Scotland it names the tight sea passages between islands and mainland — the Kyles of Bute, the Kyle of Lochalsh. The same word gives Caolán and Kyla and Kyle, and Kyli is the leanest spelling of the women's version: four letters, one of them doing the work of an ending.

The story of Kyli
Kyle came into American use as a boys' name in the twentieth century, from the Scottish surname and place name, and became widely given. Women's versions followed — Kyla, Kylie, Kyleigh, Kyli — as they usually do when a men's name becomes very common. What separates the spellings is entirely the ending: -ie and -ee read as diminutive and warm, -a reads as a formal feminine, and a bare -i reads as a mid-century American choice. This one appears in the record from the late 1970s and is strongest in the South.

a narrow strait
If the name is read through Kyle, the Gaelic caol means narrow and is used of channels of water; the district of Kyle in Ayrshire carries it too. If it is read as a spelling of Kylie, the Australian word for a boomerang and the Kyle-plus-Lee blend both come into play. American families using this spelling could be in either camp.

The Vallerie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kyli's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vallerie climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vallerie's path sketches the road Kyli is walking now.
Kyli sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is the shortest spelling of a sound that usually takes six letters.
- Ky works as a short form and suits a child of either sex.
- The Gaelic word behind it is still a living one and names real places on the map.
- Kylie, Kyleigh and Kylee are all commoner and will be written instead.
- The bare -i ending reads as a period marker to anyone who was around for it.
- It is easily confused with Kylie in speech, since they are said the same way.
