Our story of Kylen
Kyle is a good example of a name whose meaning survives its journey and whose sound does not. In Scotland it is a landscape word: caol, a narrows, the place where the water pinches between two shores. It became an Ayrshire district, then a surname, then an American boys' name that reached the top thirty in the 1980s and 1990s. By that stage it was a sound rather than a word to nearly everyone using it, and once a name is a sound it becomes raw material. Kylen, Kylie, Kylan, Kyla and Kyler all follow, for both sexes, and none of them refers to a strait. Kylen's girls' peak in 2016 is at the far end of that process, three centuries and an ocean from the water it names.

The narrows, a strait
Kyle comes from Scottish Gaelic caol, narrow, used of straits and channels — a settled reading for Kyle, which is both a district of Ayrshire and a common element in Highland place names. The -en ending of Kylen is an American suffix with no meaning of its own, drawn from the Aiden and Kaylen families. Kylen as a whole is not recorded outside American use.

The Katreena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kylen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Katreena climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Katreena's path sketches the road Kylen is walking now.
Kylen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
