Krystine is Christine wearing the spelling of a mineral. The K and the y between them import the look of crystal into a name that has nothing to do with it, and the result was one of the most recognizable American spelling habits of its decade.

Where it comes from

The story of Krystine

The most striking bearer of the name was a queen who gave it up. Christina of Sweden inherited the throne as a child, was raised and educated as a prince rather than a princess, and ruled in her own right — then abdicated at twenty-eight, converted to Catholicism in a Europe where that made her a scandal and a prize, and moved to Rome. She spent the rest of her life there collecting manuscripts and paintings, funding musicians, refusing to marry anybody, and being an embarrassment to two churches at once. She is one of only a handful of women buried in St Peter's.

Meaning

A Christian — a follower of Christ

Christine is the French feminine of Christianus, and it means what it appears to mean. The mineral is a separate word from a separate Greek root, and the resemblance between the two spellings is a modern accident. A Krystine is named for the first of them whatever the letters suggest.

Krystine sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 70 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Krystine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and simple, and the name is understood across Europe.
  • Tina and Krys are very different short forms, which gives a child room to choose.
  • The sound is familiar even where the spelling is not.
What to consider
  • Christine, Kristine and Krystine are said identically, and hers will be written as one of the others constantly.
  • The y borrows from a word the name is not related to, which is worth knowing before somebody explains it wrongly.
  • The K and y together date the spelling to a particular American decade.
