Where it comes from

The story of Krystel

A farmer in Vermont spent fifty years photographing snow crystals. Wilson Bentley worked out as a teenager how to fix a microscope to a bellows camera, caught flakes on a black board on his porch, and photographed them before they melted; he took thousands of images over a lifetime and sold prints for a few cents each to pay for the plates. He is the reason everyone believes no two snowflakes are alike, a claim he made himself and never found a counterexample to. He died of pneumonia after walking home through a blizzard.

Meaning

Crystal

The English word crystal used as a name, which happened in the nineteenth century along with Ruby, Pearl and Opal. The k in this spelling corresponds to the Greek letter more closely than the c does, which is an accident of fashion rather than a restoration of anything.

Pronouncing Krystel

KRIS-tul

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why -el, -al and -le all produce the same sound and the record holds all three.

Fashion outlook

Krystel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so nobody has to be taught how to say it.
  • The word behind it is concrete and can be shown to a child.
  • Krys is a short, current, unisex everyday form.
What to consider
  • At least four spellings of this sound circulate, so spelling it out is a permanent job.
  • Neither the k nor the -el changes anything audible.
  • It is closely dated to the last quarter of the twentieth century.
