The story of Kristofor
The story everybody knows has Christopher as a giant who carries travelers across a river and one day finds a child on his shoulders growing impossibly heavy, because the child is carrying the world. It is a lovely story and it is an explanation of the name, invented later. When the Roman calendar was revised in the nineteen-sixties, a number of saints whose historical existence could not be established were removed from the universal calendar, and Christopher was among them. He was not abolished and the medals did not stop selling. In the Eastern churches the same saint takes a stranger form: icons show him with the head of a dog, from an early tradition that he came from a race of dog-headed men and was given human speech, and those icons are still painted.
