Kristian
Feminine · “follower of Christ”
Kristian is given to both — 6,820 girls and 20,814 boys since 1880. See Kristian as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Christ is not a name. It is the Greek word christos, meaning smeared with oil, and it was chosen to translate the Hebrew mashiach, the anointed one, which gives English messiah. Anointing was how a king was made. So Kristian means a follower of the man they called the anointed.

The story of Kristian
The word christianoi appears first in Acts, where the writer notes almost in passing that the disciples were first called that in Antioch, and the phrasing suggests it was a label applied from outside rather than one they chose. It became a name in late antiquity and a very common one in northern Europe after the Reformation. Denmark and Norway then made it a royal name and kept using it: ten Danish kings, which is enough to fix a spelling for a whole language. The K is not decoration. Danish and Norwegian use k for the hard sound as a matter of course, and the C in Christian is a Latin inheritance that those languages simply did not take.
Meaning
follower of Christ
From Latin christianus, from Greek christos, anointed, itself a translation of Hebrew mashiach. Kristian is the Scandinavian spelling, standard in Norway and Denmark, where ten kings have carried it. The K rather than the C reflects Nordic orthography, not a different name.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kristian went to 8 girls in 2025, but Christian and Khristian are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 919th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,998 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 39,202 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Kristian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Niki test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kristian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Niki climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Niki's path sketches the road Kristian is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning traceable through Greek to Hebrew without any gaps.
- The same name in Danish, Norwegian, German, Spanish and Italian, with only the spelling shifting.
- Kris and Chris both work at once, and one of them serves either child.
- Christian with a C is much commoner in America, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
- The name states a religious allegiance, which is the point for some families and a consideration for others.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
