The story of Kourtnie

Tennis is scored fifteen, thirty, forty, game, and nobody knows why. The leading explanation is a clock face: the hand moved a quarter for each point, and forty is a worn-down forty-five. The trouble is that mechanical clocks with minute hands were not common when the scoring is first recorded. The rival explanation is money — the jeu de paume was played for a stake, and a French coin called the gros denier tournois was worth fifteen deniers, so points were counted in coins. Deuce is à deux, meaning two points needed. Love is usually said to be l'oeuf, an egg for a zero, which is charming and may be a nineteenth-century invention. The game was played in a courtyard, which is where the court comes from, and the surname in this name comes from the same French word by a different route.

Fashion outlook

Kourtnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy and quick.
  • The place behind it is real and the descent is documented.
What to consider
  • Courtney, Kourtney and Kortney are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • Three silent changes mean the spelling must be given aloud letter by letter.
  • The sound is very common as a name, so it is not distinctive in speech.
