Cortes means courteous, and the word has an unexpectedly precise history: courtesy is behavior appropriate to a court, and both words come from the same Latin root. The Spanish surname carries it, and one bearer made it internationally known for reasons that have nothing to do with courtesy. Kortez is the K respelling, peaking in 1987.

Where it comes from

The story of Kortez

Hernan Cortes led the expedition that destroyed the Aztec empire between 1519 and 1521, and his surname became one of the most widely known Spanish names in the world. The name has other bearers and other histories, and Cortez as a surname is common throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas. Its use as an American given name grew in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in African-American naming, alongside other Spanish-sounding surnames used as first names. The K spelling belongs to that period.

Meaning

courteous, well-mannered

Spanish cortes means courteous or polite, from corte, 'court', from Latin cohors, cohortis — an enclosure, and by extension a retinue and then a royal court. So courtesy is literally the manner of the court. The surname Cortes began as a nickname for someone well-mannered. The derivation is settled. The z spelling is a common Spanish surname pattern, though the standard form of this name uses an s.

About 1 boy in 14,853 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 122,005 for Kortez itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
