Korin writes with a k a name that came through Latin with a c. That is the standard modern move, and it has an unexpected consequence: the spelling now matches the name of a Japanese painter whose screens are among the most reproduced images in the world.

The story of Korin
The Japanese painter is worth the detour. Ogata Korin worked in Kyoto around seventeen hundred, came from a family of textile merchants, went bankrupt, and painted a pair of folding screens showing irises on a plain gold ground, with no water, no bank and no horizon, just the flowers repeating across the surface in a rhythm taken from a poem everybody knew. They are a national treasure. He did another pair of red and white plum trees with a stream between them in silver leaf that has since tarnished black, which was not the intention and which everybody now thinks is better.

Maiden
If the name is a form of Corinne, the Greek behind it is kore, a girl or young woman, which was also a title of the goddess taken to the underworld. The connection is standard and not beyond argument. The k spelling corresponds to the Greek letter more closely than the c does, which is an accident rather than a restoration.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The French Corinne has the weight at the back, so this spelling represents a different rhythm as well as different letters.

Fashion outlook
Korin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with no silent letters.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Kori and Rin are two short forms with nothing in common.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- Corinne, Corin and Korrin all exist for closely related sounds.
- The stress pattern differs from the French form, so the name has to be introduced.
