The story of Kloee
The ancient world produced a great many prose romances and five of them survive complete. One is a pastoral set on Lesbos about two foundlings raised by herdsmen, and the girl carries this name. It is a strange book — deliberately artificial, deeply interested in the seasons, and funny in places about how little its two protagonists understand what is happening to them. It was translated into French in the sixteenth century, printed and reprinted, and became a standard source for painters and later for a ballet score that is now better known than the text. That translation is how the name reached western Europe at all, several centuries after Greek had stopped being read in the West. A name can survive on the strength of one manuscript getting copied at the right moment.
