Where it comes from

Our story of Klint

Hilma af Klint was painting large, deliberate, entirely non-representational canvases several years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian produced theirs. She was working from a private spiritual program, in a series she considered a commission, and she came to believe the world was not ready. Her will directed that the work not be shown until twenty years after her death. It was, eventually, exhibited much later still, and when it finally toured it drew record crowds and forced a rewrite of the standard account of how abstraction began. The paintings had been in storage, in their hundreds, the whole time.

Not established

If the name is Clint, it is a short form of Clinton, an English place name. If it is the Scandinavian word, it names a cliff or rocky outcrop. The record does not distinguish them and both are plausible.

Klint sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Klint sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters: short, strong and impossible to mispronounce.
  • The k is visually distinctive on a page of Clints, which is what it is for.
  • It works as a Scandinavian word and an English short form at once.
What to consider
  • Clint is the standard spelling, so this version will be corrected to it regularly.
  • One film actor has owned the sound in American minds for sixty years.
  • No origin is documented for this spelling, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
