Saint Ciara of Kilkeary founded a religious community in seventh-century Ireland; Saint Clare of Assisi founded the Poor Clares in the thirteenth century. Both names traveled — Ciara through Irish emigration and a 1980s revival, Chiara through Italian communities and the general fashion for Italian names. In America they converged: Ciara, Kiara, Kiera, Chiara and Kiyara all circulate, and most American bearers could not say which saint stands behind their name. The added y in this spelling belongs to the 2010s and does nothing audible.
