Where it comes from

The story of Kirsti

Her range was enormous and her manner was not. She dressed plainly, disliked publicity, and sang with a steadiness that people described as inhuman; recordings of her Isolde are still the reference point. Her career ended badly through no fault of her singing: she returned to occupied Norway during the war to be with her husband, who was later charged as a collaborator, and American audiences punished her for it for years afterwards with pickets and stink bombs. She went home, sang for another decade, and ran the Norwegian national opera.

Meaning

a Christian

The Scandinavian forms of Christina underwent a sound change that moved the r: Krist became Kirst, and Kirsten, Kirsti and Kirstin all descend from that. The bare final i in this spelling is standard in Finland and Norway rather than an American invention, which makes it one of the few short endings in the American record with a genuine European pedigree.

How the name formed

  1. a Greek word meaning anointed gives Christina
  2. Scandinavian speech moves the r and produces Kirsten
  3. Kirsti established in Norway and Finland
  4. a Norwegian soprano makes the family famous in America
  5. Kirsti appears in the US record in the 1950s

Kirsti sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 106 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kirsti sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The bare final i is genuinely Scandinavian rather than a modern American ending.
  • It is short, distinctive and read correctly at sight.
  • It marks a Nordic family history clearly and without difficulty.
What to consider
  • Kirsten and Kristi are both commoner in America and will be substituted.
  • The first vowel is said two ways and she will hear both.
  • It is rare enough in America to need spelling out.
