Kingston
Masculine · Old English roots · “king's estate”
Kingston is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 46,406 boys against 193 girls since 1880.
Kingston began as a description of a place: the king's estate, one of the plainest and most repeated names on the English map. It traveled with the language — to a Thames-side town where Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned, to a Caribbean harbor city, to Ontario — and only lately became something a child is called. It arrives in the mouth as two clean beats and a nickname everyone spots at once.

The story of Kingston
Kingston is an English place name, formed from cyning and tūn, and it was applied over and over to land held by the crown; dozens of Kingstons still dot the map of England. One of them, Kingston upon Thames, was the site where Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned in the tenth century. The name then followed English shipping outward: the Jamaican capital was founded and named after the earthquake that destroyed Port Royal at the close of the seventeenth century, and a Kingston sits at the head of Lake Ontario. From place to surname to first name is the usual English route, and Kingston took it — appearing thinly on American records for generations before rising sharply in recent decades.

The Glen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kingston's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Glen climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Glen's path sketches the road Kingston is walking now.
Kingston sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for English speakers, and already familiar from the map — Kingston in Jamaica, in England, in Canada.
- Comes with a ready-made short form, King, which is itself an established given name in the US.
- A word with a documented Old English origin and a clear meaning, unlike many modern place-name firsts.
- Common enough to be recognized instantly, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- The nickname King is close to inevitable, and it carries a lot. Worth deciding in advance whether you are comfortable hearing it daily.
- Almost everyone who has this name right now is a child, so it reads as distinctly of the present moment rather than age-neutral — something to weigh if you want a name that sits easily on an adult too.
- It is regularly confused in speech and writing with Kingsley and Kinsley, both in use at the same time.
- The Jamaican capital is the strongest association for many people, and some will assume a family or musical connection that may not be there.
